In response to the increasing interest in creating a more walkable community in Knoxville and Knox County, and the lack of clear policies addressing pedestrian facilities in the City and County, City of Knoxville staff, Knox County staff, and MPC staff have worked with an MPC (Commission) committee to develop a draft walkability ordinance. If adopted, the ordinance would establish standards for the provision of sidewalks and/or other pedestrian facilities in all new development and major redevelopment.
Your input is important as the Planning Commission, and the Knoxville City Council and the Knox County Commissioners, decide whether to adopt the ordinance. Please review the draft ordinance and provide your comments to me and/or the Planning Commissioners and local elected officials.
As part of the effort to obtain community input, MPC staff will host an open house June 15 from 7:30 Am to 9:30 AM at the Panera Bread at 4855 Kingston Pike.

Should you have questions and/or would like staff to meet with any group or organization, please contact me. Also, please feel free to share the draft ordinance with others.
I look forward to your input,
